It's Great to Meet You

I'm Doug Smith, it's an honor to represent you in state government.

Assemblyman Doug Smith was elected to represent the people of the 5th District in the New York State Assembly on April 24, 2018. His district spans the townships of Brookhaven and Islip in Suffolk County.

Doug Smith is dedicated to public service and fighting for Long Island. A lifelong member of our community, he is a graduate of Sachem High School in Lake Ronkonkoma and St. Joseph’s University in Patchogue where he earned degrees in Mathematics and Adolescent Education.

During his tenure, Assemblyman Smith has enthusiastically served our community resolving thousands of constituent cases, fighting to give families the tools they need to combat the heroin epidemic, advocating for changes in the law to protect victims of domestic violence, and leading the charge to repower Long Island by pushing for an overhaul of the deeply flawed PSEG/LIPA monopoly.

As a former high school mathematics teacher, Smith proudly serves as Ranking Member of the Assembly Education Committee, which is responsible for overseeing educational policies and programs affecting prekindergarten, elementary, and secondary education for approximately 3 million children attending both public and nonpublic schools. The Education Committee also participates in the process for selecting individuals to serve on the New York State Board of Regents.

Doug’s father is a mechanic, and his mother is a bookkeeper, who instilled in him a strong work ethic, the value of education, and the importance of being civic minded. He worked his way through college at Cooky’s Deli in Bohemia. He spent nights teaching adult education courses, and on the weekends helped educate homeless and underprivileged youth in the Sachem School District before fulfilling his dream of becoming a high school math teacher.

Doug and his wife, Elizabeth, reside in Holbrook where they are raising their daughter, Sophie. They attend Westminster United Presbyterian Church in West Islip.

"I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of New York, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Member of the Assembly according to the best of my ability, so help me God."

- Assemblyman Doug Smith
taking office on April 30, 2018
